Setting up Accounts

Just a quick one, Today we’re setting up a new PC for a family new to the internet so we will be helping to set up all their accounts so I’ll list them to help me remember.

  • Google – Email Mail & Chat
  • Facebook – Accounts just for the Adults
  • Ebay- Family account, but access just to mum & dad
  • Skype – free calls to other Skype users and cheaper calls to abroad.
  • Twitter – Mum likes to keep up with the celebs
  • Paypal – a safe way to pay for goods on line.
  • Microsoft live – gives access to lots of free Microsoft products
  • Iplayer – Free access to BBC Programs
  • YouTube – Free videos, lots of self help for dad’s DIY jobs.

That should get them started, BBC & Channel Five have get free children areas, so I’ll bookmark those pages for them too.

Free Virus Software

Today we have been looking at the various types of virus protection, software and hardware. First of all the best thing to do is back up your files, some thing I use is called Dropbox, it easy to use and all you do is safe your work to that file, you can access it from any other computer/ Iphone/ Ipad/ Andriod Device even Internet TV. It backs up your files as well.

For us if we forget a program when we come to you I can log into my dropbox and load it from there. Saves emailing files around, which is a lot safer.

So if you’ve backed up all your files then if a virus does get it, its easyto remove.

We can come to your home set up some free virus software, check your firewall and back up your files.

Helping Mining Sales with SCADA Project

Today I’m helping our other company Mining & Tunnelling Supplies Limited,(www.miningsales.co.uk) write some VB.Net programs for working out power on Transformers and Voltage drop on Cables, Its basic stuff but takes time to write the code, test and then add to the web pages.

I’ve been studding for my Microsoft certification in VB.Net for a while and it’s nice to use it, Also we’ve been looking at social media as a way to promote PC Help Wales, writing the Blog will also help with people searching for help.

We’ll try and get the blog as helpful as possible and not just an advert, please feel free to Comment.

Wifi & Broadband Problems

Morning,

Due to the bad weather a number of our customers are having broadband problems, if you have overhead telephone lines then the wind can effect the quality of your broadband, which can lead to it dropping out/ Disconnecting there is not much that can be done to fix this. We can come and check that its not a problem inside your home.

The other problem we have come across is with underground cables, is water flooding the junction boxes and again dropping out/ disconnecting. We will come to your home and check your internal wiring before calling out the telephone engineer. Hope your all safe

Poor IT at Hotels

Sorry no blog for the last couple of days, had meeting and a wedding to go to. Booked hotels with free WIFI, The Village Hotel, Leeds South. Lovely hotel but no access to HTTPS even using a proxy server. Really good meeting but the Battery on the Netbook is fries so even IT consultants have problems, should have had a spare battery maybe.

Then next problem was the Mobile charger didn’t charge the phone on the way up in the car, so that was flat had to put out of the hotel to the White Rose Centre and buy a new charger. Will Order 2 new netbook batteries Monday.

The wedding was at the Celtic Manor Resort, which did have a very good Wifi network and also a network port and cable in the room. But no time of blog as at a Katie Jones’ Wedding. Will be make too work Monday with a Wii BBC IPlayer to setup and SKY Magic Eye.

Hope the weather does get to bad

Electrical Work

Morning,

Today we are working in a house in Pontardawe, changing the lighting over to energy saving LED, the old Halogen GU10 downlights will be replaced with new LED lights, we will also be adding some colour changing mood lighting and some LED Rope lighting on top of the wardrobes.

LED lights are very low power, give off very light heat and last a very long time, so ideal for putting in hard to access areas.

The colours available are great as we have a day white for the roof lights which is great as its like day light, so picking clothes or putting on make-up all looks like it would under natural light. The Rope light is warm white, which is great for background light not as harsh as day white, good for reading as it doesn’t reflect off the paper as much.

We will also be checking over the 3D cabling we put in a couple of months a go, as the TV’s have not yet be installed, the HDMI cable was built into the walls so that the TV’s have no cables on show, so looks like the 3D LED TV is just floating on the wall. We may also add some mood lighting leds behind the TV at a latter date.

Bluetooth & Freeview

Today’s Jobs,

Set up the bluetooth in a Customers new Nissan Qashqai, the car has a build in handfree for the Phone, it should only take a few minutes to set it up and test. We will also backup all the contacts from the phone just in case it gets lost or breaks.

Freeview, South wales has been with out analogue TV for some while now but some customers still have older TV with out freeview built in, so today we are setting up a Freeview box and DVD player in a customers son’s bedroom. We will also be looking at the best place to set up the customers Wii as well, taking a new IR control Bar that sits on top of the TV.

The Window in our new office is leaking so that’s a problem for us to sort.
